North Bay Campgrounds
On May 17, 2024, 223 eighth-grade students from the Fulton Junior High School, dressed in their bright yellow safety shirts, arrived at North Bay Campground in Fulton, NY to assist our community in revitalizing this hidden gem in Fulton, NY. Students created a community garden, a tree nursery, repaired the horseshoe pit, mulched the trees, painted the flagpole and yellow posts, created new signs in technology class, raked out the tent site areas, learned about the history of Lake Neatahwanta, cleaned around the lake, painted a mural near the bath house, planted flowers to beautify the area around the main house and bath house, and learned about the plants from Atlantic States Legal Foundation.
The Class of 2028 completed a combined total of 400 community service hours that do not go unnoticed! This project was chosen to serve dual purposes. It provides our students with credit toward the Seal of Civic Readiness, a distinction at graduation, and it also brings awareness to the campground and hopefully revenue for the city. Students are learning and practicing valuable lessons on being part of their community. Our hope is that it will carry over to other projects throughout the city.
The class of 2028 looks forward to returning to North Bay Campgrounds in Spring of 2025!
This project would not have been possible without the support of several community partnerships and sponsors including:
Richard S. Shineman Foundation for donating $3000 toward many of the main supplies for the project and an ice cream social to celebrate;
Fulton Block Builders for donating $3000 toward safety shirts, materials for the new signs, and a pizza party;
Walmart for donating $100 toward necessary supplies for the mural and planting of flowers;
B & T Sports for offering a discounted price to include safety shirts for both students and staff members, making them easily noticeable at the campground;
Stewarts (Ice-cream...)
Fulton Athletic Department for loaning us water jugs to keep students hydrated;
Atlantic States Legal Foundation for donating trees for planting and educating students about the surrounding forestry;
Jim Farfaglia for his collaboration between the school district and the community, specifically members of the Noon Rotary Club and Fulton Garden Club for their hard work preparing and cleaning up the campground for students to safely complete the projects;
Chris Waldron and the Department of Parks and Recreation for their support in providing rakes, shovels, and prepping the area prior to student arrival;
Jim Rice, Mayor of Fulton, for visiting the work areas and showing support to the hard work from our youth in this community;
Carolyn Mosier and Tim Carroll, Fultonians who volunteered their time to provide activities for the students.
Teachers at the Fulton Junior High who took their time to help organize the event and make sure students had what they needed to be successful. Also the instructional coaches who supported the projects and helped students and staff at the stations.
