Fulton students, staff members discuss vaping dangers with lawmakers
Fulton Jr. High School recently hosted local, state and national leaders to talk about the newest e-cigarette, Elf Bar, which is targeting kids and teens through its social media advertising campaign.
“This is a serious problem,” Sen. Chuck Schumer said at the podium with bipartisan lawmakers standing united behind him. “But we can stop it. That is why I'm calling on the FDA to investigate Elf Bar. To investigate their practices, and should they find they’re violating the law, which I think they will, shut them down.”
Fulton junior Harper Ells took the podium and noted that vaping impacts more than just those who are using the e-cigarette. “It definitely impacts all of us; the teachers, the students,” Harper said. “A lot of girls huddle in little groups … and you don’t know if they’re going to ask you to do it as well. That’s a really hard thing that students suffer with -- peer pressure.”
Ells, along with other students, teachers, administrators, local agencies and community representatives, are collaborating to address the issue and develop ideas to quell the use of e-cigarettes among children and teens.
