Volney Elementary Cuts Ribbon for New Book Vending Machine

Volney Elementary School Friday held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate its new book vending machine.

District administrators joined students and staff for the occasion, welcoming the addition that will offer a fun experience while building upon existing framework to improve literacy.

"As a school we are hoping to emphasize the importance of literacy while fostering a community with a love for reading," Principal Elizabeth Stoddard said. "The vending machine goals are in alignment with both the leadership and literacy components of Fulton City School District's Strategic Coherence Plan."

Administrators are working with the School Improvement Team and Site-Based Committee to lay out the ground rules for receiving a gold coin which allows a student to vend a new book.

The coin can be earned in 4 ways:

  • All recipients of a monthly character award
  • All recipients of the monthly On-A-Roll Award
  • Monthly drawing for students receiving a Volney BRAG
  • 3 accumulated “Caught you reading” coupons

Volney Elementary is accepting community donations of new or lightly used books, along with cash donations, toward the cause. Families within the school can also purchase books from Scholastic book orders sent home by teachers with a note indicating which books they wish to donate.

The book vending machine was supported and funded through the Volney Parent-Teacher Group.
