Terry Caviness is currently Director of Bands at G. Ray Bodley High School, where he directs the schools Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Two Jazz Ensembles, Jazz/Rock Combo, Pep Band and Brass Ensemble.  He also serves on the high schools Leadership Team. Mr. Caviness is an adjunct professor of Music at SUNY Oswego, serving as the schools brass instructor and teaching music theory and appreciation.  He is co-founder and conductor of the Allegro Youth Wind Ensemble program, which consists of both a younger concert band of 7-9th graders and an older select ensemble drawn from 10-12 grade students around Central New York.  Mr Caviness serves as an active guest conductor, clinician and performer around the state.
 
 
Mr. Caviness was most recently seen playing lead trumpet for the show Sweeney Todd at Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, and in recitals of solo music for trumpet at SUNY Oswego. He has performed with Symphoria, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Utica Symphony, Schenectedy Symphony, Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, Central Winds, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Syracuse University Theatre, Syracuse Chorale, Marcellus Chorale and played backed up numerous musicians throughout his performing career including Aretha Franklin, Jerry Vale, and Patti Paige.  Mr.  Caviness has performed as featured artist with the Central New York Youth Wind Ensemble, the Baldwinsville High School Band and was soloist for the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble at New Music Chicago where he premiered the “Voyage of Columbus”.  Mr. Caviness played on a recording of the brass music of Karel Husa, which was nominated for a Grammy and he performed with the Central Winds at the 2009 Midwest Symposium. 
 
As a clinician Mr. Caviness has participated in clinics at The Eastman School of Music, The Crane School of Music,  Ithaca College, Syracuse University, NYSSMA conference, NYSBDA conference and many County music organization professional development days.  Under his direction the AllegroYouth Wind Ensemble, performed at the New York State Band Director’s Association’s State Symposium, where he also gave a clinic on community youth music.  That same year Mr. Caviness presented a clinic on brass teaching techniques at the New York State School Music Associations Summer Conference.  Mr. Caviness was a guest conductor at the Susquehanna University band festival and with the Syracuse University Wind Ensemble.  He has guest conducted several high school bands and select festivals around the Central New York Area.
 
Mr. Caviness is also active  as a music advocate.  He was founder and co-chair of Artstars, which is a community support group for the arts.  He also serves on the board of the Central Winds as treasurer and has served in many capacities on the board of the Oswego County Music Educators, most recently as president.  Mr. Caviness holds Music Performance and Education degrees from SUNY Fredonia, a Master of Music performance from Northwestern University and  a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Adminstration from Syracuse  University.
