Granby Elementary Sixth-Grade Class Gets Lesson in News Writing

Students in Erica Bertrand’s sixth-grade class at Granby Elementary School recently learned key elements of news writing from community member Brittney Jerred.

Jerred shared her experiences as a newspaper reporter, although she now handles media relations for Assemblyman William A. Barclay. The focus of news writing, she said, should be on accuracy in research, reporting and in listening to people tell their stories.

“The writing is only as good as the reporting,” Jerred said.

Bertrand said there has been an emphasis on that idea, as students have practiced with the who, what, when and where of writing news articles. Students interacted with Jerred to list important steps of the writing process.

“The primary source is someone involved, not just a witness,” said student Mackenzie Coant.

Coant and her classmates will write newspaper articles about their lives, and reports on the sixth-grade rocket launch. Future projects include participation in the sixth-grade newspaper club and developing an online newspaper. Bertrand said those assignments are parts of the English Language Arts curriculum, and Jerred’s presentation was an added help.

“It brings some validity to what we’re doing because it’s real life,” Bertrand said.
