FCSD to offer back-to-school experience

The Fulton City School District is committed to developing lifelong learners, including providing an all-encompassing back-to-school event for its families.
From 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 20 in the Fairgrieve Elementary School cafeteria, the district will host its annual Stuff-a-Bus school supply distribution with several extra benefits to help ease any financial burden for families. FCSD families are invited to the one-stop-shop experience to receive supplemental school supplies and backpacks, free books from both the school district and Brooke’s Books Project, haircuts from Hair We Are and other local stylists, the ability to select a gently-used first-day-of-school outfit, personal care packages and information from local community agencies, including Fulton Community School and the Fulton YMCA. There also will be information for Fairgrieve Elementary families on the in-house CHOMPERS program, for dental needs.
Karen Noel, FJHS teacher and Fulton Teachers Association Executive Vice President, said the event was a happy accident, which expanded from just a school supply distribution with support from the United Way of Greater Oswego County to an overall experience thanks to the greater Fulton community. The time also was switched from the morning to the late afternoon/evening to accommodate working families who may not be able to afford to take time off work.
“It all morphed into something by accident and I’m kind of excited about it,” Noel said.
She credited the United Way, Fulton Teachers Association members, FCSD administrators and community supporters for making the event possible.
Parents and guardians are asked to bring their child’s fourth-quarter report cards to prove district residency. For haircuts, parents/guardians are asked to bring their child with clean, wet hair.
