FJHS 8th graders introduced to life at GRB

Fulton City School District eighth-graders have begun their transition to high school.

An information night was recently held in the cafeteria at G. Ray Bodley High School where parents, guardians and the future freshmen listened to high school counselors and administrators provide insight on life at GRB. Prior to the event, counselor Kelly Rickert spent two days with the eighth-graders at the Fulton Junior High School where she introduced them to high school requirements, including the need for 22 credits to graduate.

Rickert, who will serve as counselor to the incoming freshmen for their first two years at GRB, reviewed with the audience all of the class offerings. All freshmen must take English 9, Global 9, science (biology), a science lab, math and physical education. They also may choose two electives: languages other than English, technology, business, band, chorus, orchestra, studio in art, Project Lead the Way DDP, Tech DDP or Seminar 9. A four-year planning document will help each eighth-grader develop their Fulton City School District high school education plan.

The following morning, GRB Principal Donna Parkhurst welcomed the eighth-graders on a brief visit to the high school where they were introduced to school personnel and asked questions to a panel of a variety of teachers. Business teacher Angela Ferlito strongly encouraged them to become involved in clubs, activities and/or sports so they feel connected with the GRB family.

Both events served as an introduction to the eighth-to-ninth-grade process, and is one of several events offered to provide the students comfortability about heading to high school. Additional events include freshman orientation and Freshman First Day.
