FCSD’s 4th annual Parent University a hit

Fulton City School District’s goal to increase family engagement occurred with the Crofoot family even before the youngest Crofoot began his FCSD educational journey.
Mom Leah Crofoot said she took her son, Ian, to the district’s annual Parent University event at G. Ray Bodley High School to enroll him in FCSD’s Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. What she got in return reached far beyond a classroom for 4-year-olds. The Crofoots worked side-by-side, prepping a make-and-take vegetable and sausage meal, visited partner agencies at the community resource fair and checked out several family sessions.
Carri Waloven, FCSD Director of Literacy and UPK, said several families registered their 4-year-olds for the 2018-2019 first-come, first-serve program because the one-stop shop of an event appealed to them. Connecting families with school and community resources was the ultimate goal, according to Geri Geitner, FCSD Director of Student Support Programs.
“We appreciate your involvement in our school community,” she told a large crowd that gathered in the cafeteria. “We’ll be back next year, bigger and better.”
A total of 122 families attended Parent University, which featured a Board of Education roundtable discussion, children’s activities, educational sessions for parents and guardians and several fun family sessions. Both breakfast and lunch was served to attendees, who ate together in family-style dining.
Geitner said the district continuously looks for ways to improve engagement between all Fulton schools and families, and appreciates any feedback from adults and students.
