FJHS 7th graders attend college for a day

Fulton Junior High School seventh-grade students recently packed their bags and went off to college…for one day.
The annual field trip, a collaboration of Fulton Community School, FJHS and Cayuga Community College, sought to provide the youngsters with an introduction to life beyond middle school.  As the seventh-graders walked the hallways of CCC’s Fulton campus and listened to college professors talk about their courses, Janice Scott, resource coordinator for Fulton Community School, said she was relieved to hear excitement from FJHS students. The day was important, she said, because it has paved the way for the seventh-graders to consider their future goals.
Bruce Blodgett, CCC director of admissions, said CCC could be a good fit for students and it’s important they realize they have a choice on where they attend college. The work, Scott said, begins now. That also was emphasized as the seventh-graders listened to a panel of CCC students talk about their transition into higher education.
The FJHS students also visited various classrooms and participated in hands-on science demonstrations, discussed interests and careers, explored items under a microscope and learned about both law enforcement equipment and writing professionally in college. CCC students then joined the seventh-graders for lunch and a campus tour before the event concluded.
Scott said seventh-graders have explored a two-year college, while eighth-grade students will visit a four-year college this spring.
