Fairgrieve students advance to district book battle

Months of preparation, including the cover-to-cover study of 10 chapter books and all of their miniscule details, paid off for the Wonder Girls team at Fairgrieve Elementary School.
Team members Zoey Kerr, Riley Niver and Carleigh Patterson took home first-place honors in the school’s annual Level 2 Battle of the Books competition for fifth- and sixth-grade students. The girls stood out among the teams, all of which had 30 seconds to answer 16, randomly-drawn detailed questions about the books.
Eight points were awarded for the correct title and author, while only five points were awarded for the correct title. A key word from the title and author had to be written on an answer sheet, and that information had to match the team’s verbal response.
All questions were asked in the format of “In which book…” before a very specific detail was provided. Participating teams knew the answers to questions about which book had a seating chart of a cafeteria, a fight over a towel and characters hiding in a library, to name a few examples.
In the end, the Warrior Girls achieved 80 points, while the Cyber Hawks team of Grace Hutton and Doug VanSanford garnered 71 points for a second-place finish. Both teams have advanced to the Fulton City School District battle on Feb. 28 where they will compete with other Level 2 teams from Granby and Volney and Lanigan elementary schools.
Librarian Barb Senecal said she was proud of all Battle of the Books participants because it takes a huge commitment to read all of the books in addition to their regular school work and other activities. The Level 1 teams, comprised of third- and fourth-grade students, have also advanced to the district-wide battle. Those teams are The Awesomes, with students Olivia Nesbitt, Kiernan Percival and Brayden Wise, and The Book Crushers, with students Sophia Hanlon, Alyssa Hatter and Grace Vogel.
