Former FCSD student inspires Volney students

One piece of advice former Fulton City School District student Tim Conners would like Volney Elementary School students to remember is their character can far outweigh their circumstances.

Rising above challenges, succeeding through troubling times and believing in yourself are three key components, Conners said, to achieving dreams. Those messages were told in grade-level presentations to students in kindergarten through six, as well as a recent school-wide assembly. Conners, a Fulton native, recounted his health journey that led him from a healthy boy to a cancer patient to a blind cancer survivor.

Conners has stopped at nothing to reach his ultimate goal- hiking up to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. Months of planning, preparation and teamwork afforded him that ultimate opportunity in late spring of 2017.

“Anything is impossible until you do it,” he said. “Remember, it doesn’t matter where you came from; you can achieve anything.”

That lesson, he said, can be applied to the students’ school work or everyday life.

Students remained engaged in his presentation and asked several questions on the following topics: his daily routine, his service dog Lang and how he trekked down the mountain.
