How are these web-based applications managed? Each Chromebook that FCSD provides to students in grades 3-12 will be a managed device. Members of the district’s Technology Department will maintain devices through our Google G-Suite for Education account.

When will Chromebook distribution begin?

The 1:1 Chromebook distribution began in 2016. We anticipate full implementation by the fall of 2018.

What devices can students connect to a Chromebook?

Chromebooks can connect to USB storage, mice and keyboards; external monitors and projectors; as well as headsets and microphones.

What about privacy?

G-Suite apps are governed by a detailed privacy policy and security measures which FCSD has reviewed and approved. Under our Terms of Service agreement with Google, the organization is obligated to comply with FERPA regulations. The district also complies with the Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and provides content filtering on Chromebooks on any network. Please check out the FCSD DLI: Chromebook 101 page.

How does this help my child learn?

Please check out the FCSD DLI: Resources page for additional information and research studies that establish the legitimacy of technology integration into the classroom.

Should I be concerned about screen time?

Discussion around screen time often focuses only on duration.  Limiting the amount of time a child uses a device can be useful, but focusing on the three Cs of screen time can be a helpful guide to protecting your child.

Screen time considerations.

  • the content your child is interacting with

  • the context in which they are using it (who with, where, when, how)

  • the connections or relationships that it is facilitating or undermining

Screen time should be directed toward the creative process, and away from passive consumption.
