FCSD’s annual Parent University draws a crowd

Learning opportunities were abound during the Fulton City School District’s annual Parent University, held April 1 at G. Ray Bodley High School.

Nearly 70 families flocked to the “Healthy Families, Healthy Community” event, which featured a Board of Education and superintendent discussion, lessons in science, cooking, family budgeting, college applications and stress management, among several additional educational choices. FCSD Director of Student Support Programs Geri Geitner said she was elated with the success of Parent University.

“The event really showcased the strengths of our school district and family and community partnerships and the wonderful opportunities that exist for families to be involved and supported,” she said.

That included conversation with school-to-home liaisons and information on extracurricular activities as part of the resource fair where 27 agencies and organizations were represented. Universal Pre-Kindergarten and kindergarten registration was also offered, as were physicals and immunizations. Parent University was made accessible, as the FCSD provided transportation.

Annette Hurlbut attended Parent University with her grandson, Volney Elementary School first-grader Gavin Cox. The pair prepared one-pan chicken and vegetables during a hands-on culinary lesson in the “Make and Take” family session. Hurlbut said she enjoyed the free day of activities.

Guests were also treated to a Quirk’s Players performance of the opening number of “The Addams Family,” GRB’s recent school musical. Supervised children’s activities were offered if parents, guardians or community members wanted to attend a session alone.

“We look forward to building on the success that this event has yielded over the last few years to engage more families and community partners, not just at Parent University, but events throughout the year,” Geitner said.
