Author visits Fairgrieve, inspires hair donation

A good book often has relatable characters and “Melissa Parkington’s Beautiful, Beautiful Hair” by Pat Brisson was no exception for Fairgrieve Elementary School students, staff members and parent volunteers.

The story followed the journey of a little girl who wanted to be known for more than just her long hair. After she discovered that being kind was good, the little girl decided to donate her hair. So did Fairgrieve second-grader Dahni Perry, sixth-graders Linda Hartmann and Vera Butchko and staff member Kim Brockway, all of whom collectively donated over two feet of hair. That message of kindness and compassion carried on to parent volunteer Kimberly McEachen, who had her long locks chopped off for a good cause during a recent Morning Express program in the presence of Brisson herself.

Brisson said she was floored at the kind hearts of many Fairgrieve families. She carried similar lessons over to her visits with students in grades kindergarten through second in the school library media center. Brisson then recited the words from her books “Benny’s Pennies” and “Before We Eat” as she showed students book illustrations on the SMART Board. During the kindergarten session, students took turns recalling words that rhymed and asked Brisson about book characters and other details.

Library Media Specialist Barb Senecal surprised one student from each K-2 class with one of Brisson’s books. Senecal said that was made possible by a donation from the Fulton Teachers Association.
