Volney students recognized for perseverance

Several Volney Elementary School students were recognized by their classroom teachers because the youngsters displayed perseverance throughout the month of March.

Those students were honored by Principal Todd Terpening during a recent school assembly where they each received a Principal’s Award for their efforts. He also commended each student in grades three through six who completed the New York State English Language Arts exam, which was offered last month. As students work through the fourth quarter of the 2016-2017 school year, Terpening encouraged all students to persevere through any academic or behavioral challenge they may face, and to set their own goals.

Principal’s Award honorees include: Rylee Emeterio, Marjorie Blais, Evelyn Gravely, Donny Gates, Dylan Bigelow, Makayla Clark, Trinity Hughes, Abigail Towle, CJ Rowlee, Gwendalyne Hollenbeck, Joseph Smith, Jaxin Cates, Ava Ditton, Aidan Baldwin, Mackenzie Kerfien, Ian Dygert, Troy Becker, Teddy Clayton and Jarret Austin.

Also recognized were students who made great strides in the classroom. For their efforts, they received “On a Roll” certificates and recognition in front of their peers, teachers and guests. Awardees include: Caden Torello Smith, Matthew Anderson, Josslyn Barker, Devin Catalone, Gavin Cox, Collin White, Xander Reed, Treyvin Munger, Christian LaValley, Emily Detor, Alexander Collins, Eli Prior, Calen Clark, Cadence Schneider, Alyson Sheffield, Jaya Whitehead, Tyler Budd, Lucas Smith, Austin Pyne, David Matthews and Emilee Vant.

During the school assembly, Terpening also shared a video on April’s Virtue of the Month (self-control), made by Volney’s first-graders. They encouraged students to keep their hands off of others, take a breath or countdown from 10 when mad, be nice to friends and do not speak when the teacher is talking. The first-graders also drew self-control posters, which are displayed throughout the school’s halls.
