Select Volney students lead own conferences

Several Volney Elementary School students have taken charge of their own education.
Students in Tracy Richards’ class recently led their parent-teacher conference at the end of the first marking period. This process, she said, has increased student engagement and allowed them to take ownership of their learning.
Richards’ students practiced reciting information to their peers before their meetings. During one conference, First Grader Michael Herrald showed his mother, Meghan, a snapshot of his accomplishments, complete with photographs and data charts. He shared what he enjoyed about school, goals he has worked on, his writing portfolio and he reflected on progress he has made since the beginning of the school year.
Richards said student-led conferences are not required and fellow teachers have inquired with her about how the process works. The student-led concept also received a thumbs up from Principal Todd Terpening.
