Children’s author Kate Messner visits Fairgrieve

One year after reading “Ranger in Time: Rescue on the Oregon Trail” for the 2015-2016 Battle of the Books event, current Fairgrieve Elementary School fifth-graders knew exactly who the school’s recent guest was.
Children’s Author Kate Messner visited the school to speak with students in grades three to six about her writing journey. During her presentation, she shared the following tips with students: jot down ideas in a notebook, research the topic, re-imagine fairytales, create a to-do list, make revisions, accept constructive criticism and create the final piece.
Several students said they related to Messner because their teachers comment on their work to help improve writing skills. The fifth-graders and sixth-graders also offered Messner new book ideas, some of which she said she may consider.
Fairgrieve Library Media Specialist Barb Senecal said the third-grade and fourth-grade students enjoyed another question-and-answer session with Messner, who announced a few new “Ranger in Time” books will be released within the next year.
The Fulton Teachers Association and the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization donated funds to purchase Messner books for a handful of students. She happily autographed each one.
Senecal said students of all ages will continue to read Messner’s fun, adventurous books in the school’s library media center.
