Mr. Kuracina's 5th Grade Class
Welcome to our 5th grade webpage!
This year in 5th grade we are working on colloborative learning. Students work together, and with the teacher to find reasonable outcomes to both mathematical situations, and social situations.
Students in our math class are held to a high expectation, but also are encouraged to struggle and make mistakes with new concepts. This struggle will foster a positive work ethic and provide students with an opportunity to think critically and problem solve together.
As a teacher my job is to support and guide students through the learning process. Think of me as a tour guide on climbing expedition. I will point students in the right direction, give them the right tools to be successful, but they are the ones doing the hard work to get to the top of the mountain.
In our math class homework is used as an extension of the practice done in class. I don't have a "homework every night policy" becasue it depends on how students are managaing with the content of that days lesson. I assign homework as I see it is needed. The bulk of our independent work is done in class for a reason. I check in with every single student to gauge their understanding of that days work and give support where needed. If I feel the class has an adequate understanding of that days lesson, I will assign extra practice to be done at home. Students alway have the option of doing homework, even if it is not assigned.
